Meta Muse explained: a WhatsApp chat handing an errand to an AI agent working on its own cloud computer

In September 2026, Meta launched Muse, a personal AI agent that does things for you instead of just answering questions.3 You give it an errand, and it works on it in the background, on its own computer in the cloud.

That makes it one of the first mainstream “agents” most people will try. Here is what it is, how it works, what it does with your data, and which alternatives might suit you better.

How Muse works

Most AI assistants answer in the chat and stop there. Muse is built to carry an errand through to the end.

You askIn the Muse app or a WhatsApp chat.
It plansMuse breaks the errand into steps.
It works on its cloud computerIt opens websites in its own browser and keeps going after you close the app.
It asks before it actsBy default, it checks with you before important steps like sending an email or buying.
It reports backYou get the result in the chat.
The difference from a chatbot: Muse does the work in the background, on a computer you don’t see.3

Because it runs on a cloud computer, Muse can keep working after you put your phone away. That is also why it asks before steps that matter: it is acting on websites on your behalf.

What Muse does with your data

An agent that reads your email and calendar and acts for you sees a lot. Here is what Meta says about it.

Alternatives to Meta Muse

Muse is one of several personal AI tools. They differ most in what they do on their own, how often they ask first, and who you are trusting with your data.

Is Muse right for you?

Muse fits if

✓You are in the US
✓You mainly want errands done in the background
✓You already live in WhatsApp
✓You are comfortable with Meta handling your data

Look elsewhere if

×You are outside the US
×You want help before you ask, not only when you ask
×You want your health, inbox and calendar read together
×You prefer a company that isn’t ad-funded

If you are outside the US, or you want an AI that notices what matters before you ask, Lucie is built for that. It is made and hosted in the EU, does not train on your chats, and works on iPhone and Mac.
